Wrong: problem with antisemitism started ( or should i say " re-started") long before October 7. There has been a long developing world view and identity politics on the LEFT that places jews as being an opressor and core cause of injustice- unfortunately we are stuck with this shallow world view for quite some time, incubated and perpetuated on many colledge campusses. Noteworthy that NYT itself takes a similarly shallow view of current antisemitism on campusses. NYT asks about antisemitism but answers about something else. Dissapointing blind spot

Its not liberal culture on Campuses, its far left , bordering anarchism, on campus. Stop equating the two. The congressional hearing where to understand why the presidents of these university did nothing to help Jewish students feel safe or even prevent getting attacked by the leftist mob. You are the greatest spinners on actual facts of the situation. Lord this is why NYT is losing so much credibility as a news agency and being see as a leftist ideology pusher.

notice: Amy Wax once said things like African students should not go to such a top uni as Penn, and that Asian should be as few as possible in the US, she seems to be a white supremacist. And after i recap this event, it makes me wonder why, students in uni, most of them, would lean toward liberalism, can this demonstrate that staying liberal mind is just the right and rational thing to do? or too naive, too ideal…to be carried out in reality?

I do not understand how freedom for Palestinians equalls anti-semitism….especially in the context of openly expresses anti-Palestinian/muslim views from high ranking Israeli officials and the ACTUAL killing and attemptedd extermination of the Ppalestinian people by Isreal….what a topsy turvy world we are now living in.

Those heads of the top universities were a disgrace, but a great example of what has happened to academia since the 1980s. All part of destroying the ethos of the West, which always was pro Justice, Mercy, and help for the underdog. Now the academic elites (who only hate the rich) are making sure that the formerly disadvantaged are now taking over the West. And you will not like it when it comes to pass, because Justice, Mercy and help for the underdog is the last thing they care about.

I'm from Latin America and I find it weird that people find it wrong for Americans to praise violence and acts of war. Isn't that how a lot of Americans – including influential people and parts of the political leadership – behave all the time?

Anti-semitism is wrong. Being against a foreign government’s actions or our government’s taxpayer funded support of those actions can’t be anti-Semitic even if the foreign government is Israel. Israel does not speak for all Jews and it isn’t the religion, it is a government. Being an apartheid ethnostate makes people conflate Judaism with the state of Israel.
Calling for the genocide of Jews is abhorrent. Much of the speech at the protests ‘from the river to the see, Palestine will be free’ and free Palestine’ are not genocidal language. Actual genocide, like what Israel is committing actively in Gaza and slowly in the West Bank, is absolutely abhorrent and deserves protests.

What these university presidents showed that was if speech is against Muslims or trans people or some "oppressed" minority, and you don't use the approved pronouns and such, you can be accused of harassment and face disciplinary action. You can be cancelled. Remember "words are violence"? The threshold for harassment is much higher with antisemitism, and that it the hypocrisy and moral fraud that these presidents revealed of themselves.

The few cases of outright antisemitism should be punished, but we have to accept that Israel is now heavily unpopular with college students for being responsible for another high tech slaughter of civilians, not simple antisemitism. These are liberal college students, theyve spent a lifetime seeing the consequences of these wars.

I'm sympathetic to these university presidents, based on the apparent chain of events: they were grilled repetitively for some time about policies and procedures. Then a congress-critter dropped in a general question, and these college presidents, perhaps out of fatigue/boredom, didn't switch contexts quickly enough, resulting in kind of a legal argument about administrative procedures to a question where a simple yes/no response (calls to genocide are not appropriate) was the correct response. As a personal (and non-controversial) example, I once took a group of friends visiting Yosemite Valley rock climbing, and spent some time describing the use of device called a "grigri". We went out for dinner that evening and, due to the repetition, I ended up ordering a glass of "pinot grigri" instead of the intended "pinot grigio" (followed by me holding my head, at least figuratively).
