The SCOTUS’ take on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment seems to be a strange one, at least in my estimation. Many of the Justices seem to suggest that because the President isn’t specifically mentioned in that Section, then it does not apply to that office.
Well if the initial intention of the Section was to prevent former Confederates from holding office, do you mean to say that the framers of this Section would not have wanted Jefferson Davis to be a U.S. Senator or U.S. House Representative, yet would have been cool with him being Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, which would have put him in a position to finish the job he started in 1861 at Fort Sumter? Really?
No one would think that Ukraine would allow Vladimir Putin to be eligible to be the Head of State of their country under any circumstances if they were to win that war, so why would you think the Framers of the 14th Amendment would feel any different about a similar circumstance?
I think they should put laws and requirements in place and be investigated , do background checks before being able to run for office.
Someone with standing needs to remind the SC Justices that their legitimate role is to interpret constitutional law as it applies to the case before them, not to create & debate hypothetical public & political repercussions that might occur as a result of that interpretation. The hearing on Thursday was disappointing & patronizing, barely mentioning Trump & Section 3 as it pertains to the Colorado case specifically and, instead, wandered off into questions & discussion of how they could arrive at a unanimous opinion that would be most comfortable for the justices themselves.

It's a lie that other American states against competing political groups would later ban others from running also (leading to chaos); in reality, the judicial system would be able to help determine whether a candidate broke the law (and could thereby) legitimize candidates (across the board) who did nothing wrong. (Ordinary voters do not understand much law.) But Trump did a lot of wrong things and that is why he wanted immunity. The intelligence of the Constitution is there but nefarious judges are too blind to see it.

All that matters is the original public meaning at the time of ratification- The broad language of the disqualification clause includes not just the top Confederate leadership, but anyone who served in the Confederate military or held political office in the South during the Civil War. They were trying to keep Confederates out of politics.
