There's a big reason that this "must be impeached first" argument is ridiculous and I'm surprised nobody has pointed it out yet. A court is neutral, with no stake in the outcome. In an impeachment, half of the jurors want the defendant to be aquitted and have personal financial reasons depending on the outcome. And whoever is in charge of the Senate acts as the judge in the sense of controlling the process. It's ridiculous to compare it to a court where the jury is carefully examined to weed out any signs of bias. It's a dead argument. They should have pointed this out loudly, and repeatedly.
