DJT is also engaged in public histornics as a set up for another delay tactic: he is trying to pollute the future jury pool. Then he can claim that he is unable to get a fair trial because there has been too much pretrial publicity concerning the matter. Who will not have heard of his cases and will have not formed an opinion about them before jury selection begins? The irony is that he is the defendant creating the pretrial publicity.
This is also influenced by legal requirements. The fairness doctrine that you implicitly discussed has been repealed and has not been the law of the land for several decades. Conversely the equal time rule applies. That legal consideration is what I feel drives mainstream media's desire to present the Trump candidacy as a normal election in which to competing and opposing variations on the same policy questions or rationally discussed. Broadcast television news is trying to avoid drawing an alleged violation of the equal time rule by downplaying Trump's antics. Of course Trump is an authoritarian candidate who is not playing by those rules. In the winter of 2023 mainstream media was doing a pretty good job of countering Trump's manipulation of the news cycle by making a continuous stream of provocative and outrageous statements, thus getting free coverage for his political campaign, by simply not broadcasting or broadcasting a summary of his rhetoric. Now mainstream media feels compelled to give more on-air coverage time since he is the presumptive nominee. But again, this is principally driven by media law requirements, or more correctly a misinterpretation of the applicable federal regulations. A huge problem is that there are three propaganda networks and a major political power backing any lie or distortion that originates from Trump. So, traditional news outlets spend most of their time fact checking and arguing about things like the Big Lie, open borders, state of the economy, and crime "crisis." It is clear that MAGA-Trumpists are willfully ignorant and gladly consume lies, and are unreachable. Journalists need to stop "both-sideism" when one side is clearly lying by being prepared with follow-up questions.
When "Journalism" died and "Communications" arose in its place, as if the two are the same, reporting disappeared and advertising and PR became the goal.
Trump, will do anything & everything to get away with everything, including this gag order, it's a known fact.

4) Media should host town halls instead.

I don’t think the courts will send him to jail. The judicial system is corrupt from the Supreme Corrupt own down. We’ve been seeing it for years. For example, multiple bail outs for the Oligarchy, Citizens United, how congress gets away with insider trading, how the Supreme Corrupt is in the pocket of the corporate elite, just to name a few. Dump will not go to jail. His cult and the RNC might pay some of his fines (after they have been reduced), but that’s as far as it will go.
Dump is currently winning the election. In 2024 Dump has received more votes than he got in 2016 and 2020. More importantly, Dump has received more votes than Biden. This campaign cannot be evaluated like past campaigns. It’s not about messaging. It’s not about money. That the Dems are talking about fundraising, the UnACA, lower unemployment and slowing inflation shows the Dems do not comprehend what is happening. The only thing that matters is the size of the MAGAt cult. There are 10s of millions of MAGAts and they are highly motivated. They will get out and vote for their god king and they will go to war if Dump loses.

What the media could do is stop reporting on every legal twist and turn in the cases until a trial actually starts. Also, no coverage of him on the courthouse steps bloviating the same old, same old complaints (not NEWS).
I think the part I can play in this is no longer clicking on articles about him. Clicks equal money and the articles everyday are many.

We have a unique democracy. It's so structured as to act on the national level as strictly a two party system. European democracies are multiparty systems. If one party goes off the rails, there the damage can generally be contained. But democracy requires at least two functional parties. At some point the media and the public in general needs to acknowledge the fact that the Republican party is no longer a functioning political party. It's not a party, period.
